Restore A Firmer, Flatter Abdominal Contour

A tummy tuck, medically known as an abdominoplasty, is a procedure that restores a flatter, firmer, and more stable abdominal contour by addressing issues that cannot be corrected with diet and exercise. You may be dealing with loose, stretched skin, pockets of stubborn fat, or weakened abdominal muscles following pregnancy, weight changes, or aging. A tummy tuck in Charleston, SC, treats these concerns by removing excess tissue and reinforcing the underlying muscle structure, creating a smoother, more balanced midsection.

Tummy Tuck Overview

What Does a Tummy Tuck Treat?

A tummy tuck is performed to correct structural and surface-level concerns of the abdomen that cannot be resolved through lifestyle changes alone, including:

  • Loose, sagging abdominal skin
  • Stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Skin laxity following pregnancy or significant weight loss
  • Abdominal contour irregularities and bulging

Your Complete Tummy Tuck Experience

Tummy Tuck Surgery

On the day of surgery, you are placed under general anesthesia so you remain fully asleep and comfortable. Dr. Ulm creates a low horizontal incision across the lower abdomen, positioned to sit below the bikini or underwear line. If excess skin is present above the navel, a second incision is made around the belly button so it can be repositioned naturally. The skin and underlying fatty layer are carefully lifted to expose the abdominal muscle layer.

Separated muscles are brought back together along the midline and secured with strong internal sutures, functioning like an internal corset. Excess skin and fat are then removed, and the remaining skin is pulled downward and smoothed. If needed, liposuction is used to further contour the waist. Incisions are then closed in layers to support precise healing.

Tummy Tuck Consultation

You will meet one-on-one with Dr. Ulm for an in-depth discussion of your concerns, medical history, and aesthetic goals. He performs a focused physical examination of your abdominal skin, fat distribution, and muscle integrity. Together, you will review realistic outcomes, surgical options, incision placement, and whether liposuction should be incorporated into your surgical plan. Dr. Ulm explains the procedure step by step, discusses risks and recovery, and answers all questions thoroughly so you can make an informed decision.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

You can expect swelling, bruising, tightness, and soreness during the first 1 to 2 weeks. Surgical drains may be placed temporarily to prevent fluid buildup. You will walk slightly bent at first, but you can gradually stand upright as your tissues relax. Most patients take about 2 weeks off work. While light activity can be resumed within a few days, strenuous exercise is strictly restricted for 6 weeks. Follow-up visits allow Dr. Ulm to monitor healing over time.

Tummy Tuck Results

You begin to notice improvement in abdominal contour as early swelling decreases over the next few weeks. Your shape continues to refine over 3 to 6 months as tissues settle. With stable weight, healthy habits, and proper postoperative care, your results can be long-lasting. The natural aging process will continue, and you may develop skin laxity again, but the structural improvements achieved with abdominoplasty in Charleston, SC, will remain for many years.

I had 3 C-sections, the most recent 12 1/2 years ago, and during the pandemic, I lost almost 90 pounds. I had a lot of skin after I lost my fat. My abs were shot, and my skin was flabby, so I couldn't really enjoy my huge weight loss. I wanted a tummy tuck and brachioplasty. Last minute, I added on a little liposuction for the last little bit of stubborn fat. I met with Dr. Ulm, and felt immediately comfortable with going through with the procedure. We moved quickly because I wanted it done over my holiday break. It was DEFINITELY worth it. I was really anxious on surgery day as the pandemic was still going on, and I was nervous about major surgery, especially one I didn't "need." The anesthesiologist, nurse, and Dr. Ulm did not ignore my mental health on that day! I felt very safe and "in the right hands." He said the pain/recovery would be like with my C-sections, and that was about right! Afterward, Dr. Ulm called my husband every day to make sure I was okay, and I had to check in with a nurse every day. I felt confident that if there were a problem, I would be taken care of, even over a holiday break. Aftercare has been great, as well. My scar (on my abdomen) is right over my C-section scar. My arm scars are, of course, harder to hide, but I'm still very, very happy (as my arm flab was harder to hide!). I am still getting used to my tummy being numb, but he says it will keep getting better, and that is a small price to pay! I am about 12 weeks post-op, and I bought my first bikini ever! On the day of the consult, Dr. Ulm showed me where my scar would be, and he asked if that would "interfere with where my bikinis normally lie." I told him I have never worn a bikini. He said, "well after this, maybe you will." I didn't believe I would ever be THAT confident with my body. Laura was also awesome, helping me navigate all the craziness of scheduling the surgery and aftercare. She was always available to me. In summary, I DEFINITELY recommend Dr. Ulm and his team for your tummy tuck!

Possible Alternatives to Tummy Tuck

Not every patient requires a full surgical abdominoplasty to address their abdominal concerns. The degree of laxity, amount of excess fat, muscle integrity, and your goals all influence which treatment approach may be most appropriate. In some cases, less invasive or complementary procedures can provide meaningful improvement with shorter downtime or targeted correction.

During your consultation, Dr. Ulm carefully evaluates your anatomy and explains which option aligns best with what you are trying to achieve. Depending on your needs, potential alternatives may include:

  • Liposuction for removing localized fat when skin elasticity and muscle tone are good
  • Ayon body contouring for non-surgical fat reduction and skin tightening
  • Mommy makeover for abdominal surgery with breast procedures after pregnancy

What Is the Cost of a Tummy Tuck?

Cost depends on a multitude of factors, including the surgical technique, the facility, anesthesia, and the surgeon’s experience. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average surgeon’s fee for a tummy tuck in the U.S. ranges from $8,000 to $13,500.

However, that figure does not include anesthesia, operating room fees, or other related expenses, so your total price may be higher or lower. To understand what a tummy tuck in Charleston, SC, may cost you, schedule your personalized consultation with Dr. Ulm today.

Tummy Tuck Frequently Asked Questions

Will a tummy tuck help me lose weight?

A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. You should be close to your goal weight before surgery. Abdominoplasty in Charleston, SC, can only help remove excess skin, address localized fat, and tighten weakened muscles to improve contour.

Can a tummy tuck fix muscle separation after pregnancy?

Yes. Pregnancy commonly causes the abdominal muscles to stretch and separate (diastasis recti). During surgery, Dr. Ulm brings these muscles back together with internal sutures to restore core stability and create a flatter, more supported midsection.

Will I have visible scars?

All surgery creates scars, but Dr. Ulm places incisions low on the abdomen and carefully closes them in layers to promote optimal healing. Over time, scars typically fade and become less noticeable. You receive detailed scar-care guidance to support long-term improvement.

What are the potential risks of tummy tuck surgery?

All surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, including bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, fluid collection, and changes in sensation. Dr. Ulm reviews these risks with you in detail and takes meticulous steps to minimize complications through careful planning.

How long do tummy tuck results last?

The structural results of a tummy tuck are long-lasting. Once removed, excess skin and fat cells will not return, and repaired abdominal muscles stay tightened indefinitely. However, significant weight fluctuations, future pregnancies, or natural aging can cause new skin laxity or stretch remaining tissues over time. Maintaining a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle helps preserve your flatter, firmer abdominal profile for many years to come.
